Minister of Defence Lubomír Metnar visited the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces - The Communist Party (KSČM) agreed to support the minority cabinet led by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš - The expertise on the current price of the RBS-70 NG recently ordered by the Ministry of Defence is not available yet - Minister Metnar has appointed a new Deputy Minister of Defence - The Czech Government has authorized the promotion of Lieutenant General Aleš Opata, Chief of the General Staff, to the rank of General of the Army.

  • On 29th June On 30th June new Minister of Defence Lubomír Metnar visited the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces for the first time. Lieutenant General Aleš Opata, Chief of the General Staff, introduced Mr. Metnar to the staff officers, and informed him about the actual situation of the Armed Forces.
  • The Communist Party (KSČM) agreed to support the minority cabinet led by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš so it can survive the vote of confidence (which is to happen on 11th July). President Miloš Zeman appointed the cabinet of ANO (Babiš’s party) and the Social Democrats on 27th June.  „KSČM deputies will actively support the establishment of the minority government,” the Communist leader, Vojtěch Filip, said.
  • One of the acquisition project by the Czech Ministry of Defence raised interesting questions recently: purchase of new RBS-70 NG Very Short Range Air Defence Systems produced by the Swedish SAAB company. It appears the Czech Ministry of Defence is willing to pay a considerably higher price than other users. Saab explains that Brasil purchased renovated older systems, while the Czech Republic is interested in the new generation, the RBS-70 NG. The expertise on the current price of the RBS-70 NG recently ordered by the Ministry of Defence is not available yet.

  • Minister of Defence Lubomír Metnar (former Minister of Interior) has appointed a new Deputy Minister of Defence. Her name is Kateřina Suchoňová (27). Metnar said the reason for this nomination was the 5 year experience gained at the Ministry of Interior, where Kateřina Suchoňová lead the Cabinet of the Minister.
  • The Czech Government has authorized the promotion of Lieutenant General Aleš Opata (born 1964), Chief of the General Staff (appointed on 1st May 2018), to the rank of General of the Army. General Opata was appointed Lieutenant General on 28th October 2017. His service career can be found on nato.int.
  • Principles of Defense Acquisition Management was a topic of a two week (18th–29th June) course for the Czech Army and Czech Ministry of Defence representatives. Czech Deputy Minister of Defence Daniel Kostoval and Office of Defense Cooperation Chief LTC Michael Cushwa made the opening remarks at the American Center. The course is led by experts from U.S. Naval Post-gradual School under the International Defense Resource Management Program (IDARM). The course is covered by the U.S. Government grant for International Military Education and Training (IMET).
  • On 27th June a workshop entitled „Hybrid Threats“ was held in Thurn-Taxis palace, attended by Deputy Minister of Defence – Head of the Armaments and Acquisition Division Daniel Koštoval, Rector of the Czech Technical University (ČVUT) in Prague Vojtěch Petráček, director of the Military Technical Institute (VTÚ) Jiří Protiva, director of research and developement of the VOP CZ Martin Sedlář, and manager of the Innovation Hub - NATO Transformation Command Serge Da Deppo. The workshop focused on artificial intelligence, cybernetics and robotics.
