Retia has created a comprehensive system of detection and control systems for short-range anti-aircraft systems for the Czech Army and participates in the RBS 70 NG supply for the 25th Air Defence Missile Regiment. The company also develops and produces the ReTWis radar, which is able to detect people behind solid obstacles. Second part of the interview with Roman Bohunek, Chairman of the Board of Directors of RETIA.

Part I: About RETIA Pardubice and its current defence projects – protection against drones and more

  • In addition to ReVISOR radars, you have also supplied the fire element terminals named ReWET for RBS 70 air defence systems. The Army is purchasing other sets in the RBS 70 NG version. Do you also participate in this modernization project?

Yes, we are involved in the supply of RBS 70 NG sets for the Czech Army. We have developed a new ReWET NG fire element terminal for these sets, so that the Czech Army can integrate them into the RACCOS automated command and control system, which we have also created for the Army. ReWET NG is a mobile control module for the commander of the anti-aircraft team and represents the basic connecting element of the ensemble with superior command and fire control system. We have created a comprehensive system of detection and control systems for short-range anti-aircraft systems for the Czech Army and we have very good references from the Army. Indeed, the manufacturer of the RBS 70 sets, Saab, plans to offer its anti-aircraft system with our ReWET NG component also to foreign customers.

  • What is the nature of using the firing element terminal ReWET NG?

The primary source of information on the air situation and targets for the RBS 70 sets in the Czech military are the ReVISOR radars. The information obtained through this radar is displayed at the ReWET NG terminals. It is basically a communication and information terminal, which provides the commander of the team controlling the anti-aircraft system information on the air situation and the objectives assigned to a higher level of command. ReWET NG displays commands and signals from a superior command and fire control system, is able to simultaneously display more than 100 targets directly on a digital map background and also calculate and indicate the shooting time window, taking into account the surrounding terrain and the type of missile used. The team commander can also view the image captured by the RBS 70 NG sight in the terminal display unit in real time. The terminal can also display the target’s directional vector and the history of its movement. Two GPS receivers are built into the terminal for accurate positioning.

  • A very interesting and unique product is the ReTWis radar, which is able to detect people behind solid obstacles. Can you tell us more about it?

We have been working on the development of ReTWis for many years and are still improving it, we are currently offering the fifth generation. We are also one of the few companies worldwide to develop and produce this kind of radar. ReTWis 5 is a small portable radar device which can detect and track people as well as animals that are behind a wall or other non-metallic obstacle. Utilizing ultra-wideband (UWB) radar technology, which is specific to its high resolution, it easily penetrates even strong non-metallic barriers, such as walls. ReTWis 5 can capture very small movements, so it is possible to locate a standing person based even simply on breathing.

  • Where can the ReTWis 5 operate? Can you tell if this unique device has been used in practice, has it already found its customers?

ReTWiS 5 builds on our long-term research and development in the field of UWB technology. Being a device that can detect the presence and movement of people in buildings without the need for direct access or direct monitoring, it is primarily intended for security forces such as police or private security agencies. We cooperate with several security forces in the Czech Republic and abroad, for which this type of radar is of great benefit. Recently, for example, ReTWiS 5 is being tested by US security forces.

  • Are you preparing any other news in the field of radar systems?

In order to remain on the high-tech market, we must constantly develop new products and innovate our existing product portfolio. Only then can we be competitive compared to other manufacturers. An example of news is the ReGUARD radar, which we first publicly presented last spring. Now we want to focus primarily on the development of this radar, we are preparing more news, but I cannot be specific now.
