Czech Lion 2019 – V4 countries exercise, biggest in the Czech Republic

From 30th September to 11th October 2019, an international exercise with the participation of partners from the Visegrad Group (V4) countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary), called CZECH LION 2019, is being held. It is a command-staff exercise with partial deployment of troops and use of computer simulation, performed by the Land Forces of the Army of the Czech Republic in close cooperation with the 7th Mechanized Brigade and the Simulation Technologies Centre. Up to 800 people participate in the exercise.

In January the Czech Army started preparations for the biggest international exercise held in the Czech Repubic in 2019: the CZECH LION 2019. About 800 soldiers take part, members of the Czech 7th Brigade Task Force (7th Mechanized Brigade, 73rd Tank Battalion, 132nd Artillery Battalion, 25th Air Defence Missile Regiment and the 22nd Helicopter Base) with mechanized troops from Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. The exercise started on 30th September and will end on 11th October.

"The training aims to test the capabilities of the commanders and international crews to command subordinate units of the combat group, to jointly plan and manage the combat and react flexibly to the current development of the battlefield situation," Commander of the Czech Land Forces Major General Josef Kopecký said. “Each staff has a different command structure. The exercise will focus on the ability to work together and manage planning. At the same time, we will examine how the information flow will work, ” the commander of the 7th Mechanized Brigade, Colonel Jiří David, added.

The participation of military units of the V4 countries demonstrates the developing capabilities of interoperability even at the lowest tactical levels. All combat orders, instructions and reports are issued in English during the exercise, the national language is used within individual battalions.

The Simulation Technologies Centre is subordinate to the Training Command - Military Academy based in Vyskov, which provides development of the Czech military doctrinal system, organises basic, professional and special education and training courses of both professional soldiers and Active Reserve force. It is responsible for modernisation, upgrading and development of training facilities within Czech Military Training Areas and helps develop and equip training grounds and areas of military units.

Czech Lion 2019 is the largest exercise held in the Czech Republic this year, and it is part of the program of 200 exercises the Czech Army participates at in 2019.
